The National Weather Service said the Stillaguamish River set a preliminary flood stage record Tuesday afternoon as water spilled over its banks, covering roads and damaging homes in Snohomish County.

The river reached 21.34 feet of flooding, besting the previous high of 21.16 feet set in 2010, according to the NWS.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office implemented several road closures at points along the Stillaguamish River.

However, despite the closures, several cars still got stuck while attempting to cross flooded roadways. Fire crews had to rescue a woman who went around a road closure and was stranded in the water.

Water levels began receding Wednesday, but many areas are not yet in the clear.

2:18 It wasn’t quite an island, but water over the roadways cut off sections of Snoqualmie Valley Tuesday and people in Carnation and Fall City were doing what they could to get through the storm.

Road closure signs were up at several locations around Carnation and they were even more prominent in Fall City.

Jeremy Houston paddled up in a kayak to what just a few hours before was West Snoqualmie River Road Northeast. He spoke to KOMO News once he made it back to where the asphalt was no longer submerged.

“The road flooded out earlier than expected,” Houston said. “A friend of mine gave me a boat and told me that if I oared this way that I’d make it to dry land./”

As water levels regress Wednesday, officials are assessing the damage.

4:26 The community in low-lying areas of Skagit County claims it is used to flooding every year.

Many people had already left their homes in advance of storms Tuesday, including people in RVs, and showed up to get support from the Red Cross at Hamilton Baptist Church. The temporary shelter opened late Tuesday afternoon to provide meals and cots for people to sleep on.

A Red Cross spokesperson said the church has become a gathering place just about every year for those who live in flood-prone areas at lower elevations.

Across the street from the church, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to raise the levee by more than two feet for extra protection.
