Little is known about the events that led to the First Jedi Schism, when the relatively young Jedi Order went up against the first organized band of Dark Jedi. We know that around 24,500 BBY a faction of Jedi Knights experimented with new ways to use the Force. Frustrated by the rigid teachings of their masters, these rebels celebrated their freedom by giving into their passions and emotions, and calling on the power of the dark side. They called themselves the Legions of Lettow, and they were led by General Xendor. Their defiance provoked the Jedi Council to declare war against them, and the Jedi emerged victorious.

One of the few surviving relics of this time is a data card that provides an account of events by a Jedi Padawan who died during the conflict. His summary was rather shocking, as he concluded that unless the Jedi could find a common enemy, they would forever fight themselves.
