The James Webb Space Telescope, launched on December 25th, 2021, reached its designated orbit near the L2 Lagrange point in January 2022, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth. Circling the L2 Lagrange point and maintaining a variable distance between 250,000 and 832,000 kilometres, making it stay clear of the Earth and Moon’s shadows, synchronizing with Earth in the Sun–Earth L2 orbit maintains a consistent distance, while its wide shadow-avoiding trajectory allows the telescope to block heat and light from Earth, the Moon, and the Sun simultaneously. This prevents temperature fluctuations due to shadows, keeping the temperature below the critical 223 degree Celsius threshold required for conducting faint infrared observations on exoplanets like Proxima B.

Recent images from this telescope have unveiled circumstances surrounding Proxima B. These observations have revealed that the planet is subjected to approximately 1,000 times more solar wind radiation than Earth, and this revelation has reduced the chance of life on the exoplanet because of the powerful flares.
