Hurricane season is behind us and we’re ready to leave Grand Bahama and head for the Berry Islands, a seven-hour passage further south. We’ve been watching the weather for a good window to shove off and have picked a day that, although it isn’t perfect, doesn’t look too bad either. Little did we know that venturing offshore that day would lead to seven hours of misery.
In a sailboat it would have been stable, but our Mainship 430 trawler is like a wine bottle cork in the water, it bounces and rolls with each wave and swell. Not heavy or deep enough to hold its own against the sea. It doesn’t take much for it to start throwing us around. Seven hours of misery. That’s what our crossing was from Grand Bahama Island to Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands.
