According to a recent NASA official, SpaceX is making great strides toward completing their Starship in-space refueling technology. NASA’s Artemis moon landings will heavily rely on this technology. This is due to the fact that before SpaceX’s Starship Human Landing System (HLS) can transport a crew to the moon, it must refuel in low Earth orbit.

NASA believes that SpaceX will be prepared to connect two Starships in orbit for a bold refueling demonstration at some point in the upcoming year, a technological achievement that will enable access to the Moon.

Under NASA’s Artemis program, which seeks to bring humans back to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972, SpaceX has a contract with the government to provide two human-rated Starships for the first two astronaut landings on the moon. Although it is generally considered to be an ambitious timeline, the first of these landings, on NASA’s Artemis III mission, is currently planned for 2026.

The managers of Artemis now have two options for follow-on missions after NASA awarded Blue Origin a contract last year to create its own human-rated Blue Moon lunar lander.

Both landers’ designers have an eye toward the future. They built Blue Moon and Starship with space refueling in mind. This implies that they have the potential to be utilized for numerous flights and eventually benefit from propellants made from materials found on Mars or the Moon.

SpaceX’s plan to accomplish this was presented to a committee of the NASA Advisory Council on Friday by Amit Kshatriya, the head of NASA’s exploration division’s /”Moon to Mars/” program. The next test flight from SpaceX’s Starbase launch site in South Texas is scheduled to occur by the end of May, he added, adding that the Starship test program has begun to gain momentum.

/”Production is not the issue,/” Kshatriya stated. /”They’re rolling cores out. The engines are flowing into the factory. That is not the issue. The issue is it is a significant development challenge to do what they’re trying to do … We have to get on top of this propellant transfer problem. It is the right problem to try and solve. We’re trying to build a blueprint for deep space exploration./”

SpaceX and Blue Origin need to become proficient in the technology and procedures needed for in-space refueling before they can travel to the Moon. SpaceX now plans to try the first large-scale fuel transfer demonstration between two Starships in orbit next year.

Before then, there will be at least a few more Starship test flights. SpaceX tested the transfer of cryogenic propellant between two of the vehicle’s tanks during the most recent Starship test flight performed in March. This liquid oxygen transfer from tank to tank was a component of a demonstration project funded by NASA. According to agency officials, engineers will be able to gain additional insight into the fluid’s behavior in a low-gravity setting through this demonstration.
