In 2018, my wife and I separated when our son Rewansh was around 2 years old. It was during this time I noticed that he had difficulty understanding and responding. He wouldn’t react to his name, and had trouble speaking. After months of assessments and questionnaires, he was diagnosed with Autism. It was disheartening, but I knew I had to be strong for my son.

To gather information and support, I turned to YouTube videos, TED talks, and consultations with doctors and psychologists. Balancing work and taking care of Rewansh alone was overwhelming. As the main provider for my family, I had to manage work and be there for Rewansh throughout the day, attending his therapies and doctor’s visits. I adjusted my work schedule, starting early in the morning to leave early and take him for therapy at 5 in the evening. It felt like a never-ending race, but I made sure to take breaks on weekends to prioritize my mental well-being. I realized this journey would be long, and I needed moments of rest and refreshment whenever possible.

Time has flown by, and Rewansh is now 7 years old. He can write alphabets with ease and spell words without being taught. He requires patience and understanding. I often have to explain things to him repeatedly, but I ensure he feels heard and loved. I’m grateful to God and my parents for their unwavering support. Despite being senior citizens, they go above and beyond for their grandson. My mother learns new dishes to ensure Rewansh eats well, and my father takes him to parks in the evening for exposure.

Throughout my journey, I couldn’t find guidance or support networks for parents of children with autism. Thus, I started creating videos and posting on Instagram to benefit other parents facing similar challenges. I also participated in seminars, sharing content on how parents can contribute to their children’s well-being.

I’ve learned that challenges are only as big as we perceive them to be. As a parent, nobody can better help your child than you can. Don’t be ashamed of their existence; they teach us love, compassion, and care. Being a single parent is rewarding and demanding, requiring utmost dedication. Being a single parent has brought both fulfillment and challenges to my life.
