The FDNY Rehabilitation and Care (RAC) Units are using 2016 Freightliner 2500 / Sprinter 4×4 Vans. They are staffed by 2 light duty firefighters that are assigned to 10-75 Doubtful Signals, 10-77, 10-76 High Rise Fires and 10-60 Signals. A 2nd RAC Unit will get assigned on the 3rd Alarm. The purposes of the RAC Units are to Replenish Electrolytes to Firefighters so they don’t get dehydrated when operating at scenes. They supply decon wipes to help with carcinogens such as ash, soot, smoke and most toxins. They are to use the wipes to clean SCBA Mask, Hair, Face, Ears, Neck, Arms and Hands. On Scene Decon is very important to help remove carcinogenic compounds from the skin. Firefighters can be exposed to hundreds of deferent chemicals, gases, vapors and particulates. Some of these chemical substances are known or suspected to cause cancer. FDNY is in the process in further more doing more decon on scene which will be coming next year. RAC Units carry 5 gal cooler jugs with Ice Cold Water, Orange Gatorade Packets that can be mixed into the water and Ice Cold Towels. During Winter Season they do supply Hot Chocolate but always Ice Cold Water and Gatorade Year Round. Other things that the RAC Units carry chairs, tables, cups, pitchers, mixing paddle, spoons, Portable Heater, Misting Fan, Tent with curtains, Flares, Bleach cleaning wipes, Hand Truck, Generator, Light Tower, Hoses, Extension Cords, Safety Vests, Traffic Cones, Jumper Cables, Power Inverter, Fuels, Oils, Hydrant Wrench First Aid Kit, ABC, Flash Lights’, Tablet, Phone, Radios and other misalliances stuff. RAC & RAC Manager are under command of Safety Command.

Rehab Manager is assigned on 2nd Alarms, 10-77, 10-76 and 10-60 Signals. Rehab Manager can be a Captain, Battalion Chief or a Deputy Chief with a aide light duty firefighter. The duties is to oversea operations in the Rehab Group and be the Supervisor. By using the tablet the Officer will get units put into rehab from the incident commander of a fire and make sure they go to the RAC get electrolytes, self Decon, and make sure members are reporting to EMS to get Carbon Monoxide and Oxygen Levels monitored. (SPO2 and SPCO) The Rehab Manager carries extra supplies during Extreme Heat and Extreme Cold to help replenish the RAC Units.

Each FDNY Company is assigned a 5 gal cooler which is usually filled with ice cold water. You would see them on the back of Engine Companies and usually in a compartment or on top of the Ladder and Tower Ladders. Jumping over to the EMS Side, EMS Conditions Officers during extreme heat are suppose to carry coolers with bottles of water for EMTs working in the field.

RAC Locations & Coverage

Rehab Manager is in Manhattan with Ladder 20. Housing RAC 6 which is a Reserve and Spare RAC that can be staffed and used. Rehab Manager Responds to about 300 Calls a Year. RAC 6 when activated Covers where needed.

RAC 1 is in Manhattan currently with Engine 1 but should be going back to Marine 1. They respond to about 350 Calls a year covering BC1, BC2, BC4, BC6, BC7, BC8, BC9, BC10, BC11, BC12 (Div 3 Boxes), BC32, BC45

RAC 2 is in Brooklyn with Ladder 102. They respond to about 550 Calls a year covering BC28, BC31, BC35, BC37, BC38, BC41, BC44, BC45 (Brooklyn Boxes) BC48 (Div 11 & 15 Boxes) BC57 BC58

RAC 3 is in Da Bronx with Rescue 3. They respond to about 550 Calls a year covering BC12 (Div 6 Boxes), BC13, BC14, BC15, BC16, BC17, CB18, BC19, BC20, BC26, BC27, BC46, BC49

RAC 4 is in Queens with Engine 314. They respond to about 450 Calls a year covering BC39, BC47, BC50, BC51, BC52, BC53, BC54

RAC 5 is on Staten Island with Marine 9. They respond to about 300 Calls a year covering BC21, BC22, BC23, BC40, Bc42, BC43, BC48 (Div 8 Boxes)

When a RAC Unit only has 1FF a 2nd RAC is assigned for manpower purposes or they will send the Rehab Manager.
