Although the main characters can be recruited, you can also fight them in order to obtain their gear and souls. Getting their souls will allow you to skip some of the harder bosses later in the game.
While the fights aren’t terribly difficult, they can be hard the first time around as you’ll need to attack their limbs in a certain order to end the fight quickly.
