Vijainder K Thakur, a former IAF fighter pilot with extensive experience on the Marut HF-24 and Jaguar fighter aircraft, has expressed his viewpoint on this matter. Thakur emphasizes the significant extension of airframe life that would result from Su-30MKI modernization. However, he raises questions about the decision to stick with the older AL-31F engine over the AL-41F-1S, which he claims is more powerful, cost- effective, and fuel-efficient.
Thakur points out that the AL-41F-1S engine offers a 16% increase in power compared to the AL-31F. Moreover, it is touted as being 100% more cost-effective based on engine life and is expected to be more fuel- efficient. These advantages could potentially enhance the overall performance of the Su-30MKI fleet, providing the IAF with a more potent and efficient air combat capability.
