China is a vast and diverse country in East Asia, known for its rich history, culture, and geographical diversity. One environmental issue that has garnered significant attention in China is desertification, particularly in its northern regions. Desertification refers to the process by which fertile land turns into desert, often due to a combination of natural and human factors. These factors can include climate change, deforestation, overgrazing, poverty, political instability, unsustainable irrigation methods, or a combination of these elements. It’s important to note that desertification doesn’t pertain to the physical growth of existing deserts but encompasses the processes that endanger all dryland ecosystems, including deserts, grasslands, and scrublands. Approximately 52 million square kilometers of Earth’s ice-free land surface are drylands, impacting some of the world’s poorest countries. Desertification, a major international concern, has affected 36 million square km of land, affecting the lives of 250 million people. Africa, particularly the southern edge of the Sahara desert, is most affected. Up to 135 million people could be displaced by 2045 due to this severe environmental challenge.
